Using the same lot, the samples below illustrate how my various design levels of serivce differ. In some, the differences are obvious. In others, the differences are subtle... less about the design's layout, more about the design's plant selection.

At your free get-acquainted meeting, I will show you more samples and help you decide which design option best fits your need.

Base Design

Base Design

This is a typical smaller lot back yard’s Base Design. Depending on what you've asked for, there may be more or less labeling on the drawing than shown here. It is also the ‘base’ plan for all other level of service. It’s what you’ll see at your Concept Review Meeting (see Process) if you ordered Simple, Conceptual or Complete, where I’ll likely also show you photos of plants and other things to help illustrate my design vision for your landscape.

This option is chosen by clients wanting to select their own plants. They may know plants, but feel insecure about how best and artfully to delineate their space. It could also be a good choice for someone on a strict budget wanting to learn how select plants appropriately... they start with this Base Design then use Coaching to learn the rest over time.

Simple Design

Simple Design

This is the same lot as shown in Base Design above. As before, the plan shows the hardscape elements... and now it also shows trees & shrubs. I may use some evergreen or shrub-like perennials (like lavender or fuschia) and note a few places for annual, perennial &/or bulb flowers. All plan elements are labeled either over the specific area, or using leader lines to lists elsewhere on the plan. Depending on the plan’s complexity, I may use an icon legend rather than leaders.

This option is chosen by clients who want a more minimal look/feel in their landscape, want all or most of the details clearly defined, and don’t want to make any/many plant selection choices on their own. And because this option is ordinarily a lower-maintenance design solution, it is chosen by clients whose property will be contractor-maintained on a budget (like rental property).

Complete Design

Complete Design

This, again, is the same lot as in the previous 2 examples. As before, the plan shows the hardscape elements... it shows trees & shrubs as in Simple Design... and now it also shows annual, perennnial and bulb flower, and ground cover details. All plan elements are labeled either over the specific area, or using leader lines to lists elsewhere on the plan. Depending on the plan’s complexity, I may use an icon legend rather than leaders.

This option is chosen by clients who want a full, rich landscape, want all or most of the details clearly defined, and don’t want to make any/many plant selection choices on their own.

Conceptual Design

Conceptual Design

Once again, this is the same lot as before. This option may appear to be the same as Complete Design (hardscape, trees & shrubs, and flowers). The difference here is that I’ve not named any (or many) specific plants. Notice how many fewer labels, leader lines and other information notations are on this plan as compared to Complete Design.

This option is chosen by clients who want to choose most of their own plants (or use coaching to learn to do the choosing, planting, etc.), but who want/need a more inspirational visual guide than what they’d get with Base Design. Many clients who choose this option use Coaching for assistance as they need it.
